Ultramarathons in July

High country season. The snow's gone and the passes are open.

July sends ultras up high. Hardrock loops the San Juans and Speedgoat climbs the Wasatch above Snowbird. July 50Ks tend to be steep, thin-aired and hot at the bottom, with afternoon storms building up top.

Count back from race day

  • Mid-January: start the 10-week primer
  • Late March: start the 16-week 50K plan
  • Late June: peak week
  • Mid-July: race day

Your training season. A spring build with a long-daylight peak. The primer is your January reset; the plan starts in the muddier season and ends with dry trails. Push your vertical in May and June, close to the race goal on the weekly elevation gains.
