California Trail Races & Ultramarathons
California has more than a dozen trail races and ultramarathons on our calendar, spanning three very different challenges: the legendary Western States 100 through the Sierra Nevada, the UTMB-affiliated Canyons Endurance Runs out of Auburn, and desert half marathons in Joshua Tree. Race season runs nearly year-round, since low-desert, coastal, and mountain courses each have their own window.
Masters Athlete Insights
California doesn't have one climate problem — it has three, and which one applies depends entirely on which race you pick. The desert races (Joshua Tree, Julian, Escondido) mean heat and sun; the coastal Bay Area races (Crystal Springs, Golden Gate) mean fog, cool temperatures, and often more humidity than the mileage suggests; the Sierra races (Western States, The Canyons) mean real elevation — up to 8,750 feet — stacked on top of heat in the river canyons below it. Train for the specific race, not for "California" in the abstract.
If a Sierra race like Western States or The Canyons is on your radar, our 16-week 50K plan is a reasonable base-building start — we don't yet have a dedicated 100-mile or heat-acclimatization plan, so treat it as the foundation, not the finished program.
FAQ
What is the best California trail race for beginners?
The Joshua Tree Half Marathon — a defined 13.1-mile distance on open, non-technical Mojave desert terrain, without the elevation or heat extremes of California's bigger mountain and canyon races.
How do you get into the Western States 100?
By lottery, and only after finishing a qualifying race the year before — it isn't an open sign-up event. If it's a multi-year goal, plan the qualifier first; The Canyons Endurance Runs (same region, on-demand entry) is a reasonable alternative if you want the terrain without the wait.
What is the hardest trail race in California?
The Western States Endurance Run — 100.2 miles from Olympic Valley to Auburn, roughly 18,000 feet of climbing, canyon sections that regularly hit 100°F+, and a course that's been the benchmark for 100-milers since 1974.
When is trail racing season in California?
Effectively year-round — desert races run in fall and winter to avoid summer heat, Bay Area coastal races run through winter and early spring, and the Sierra Nevada races (Western States, The Canyons) run late spring into summer once the high country clears of snow.
Are there masters (40+) divisions at California trail races?
Most races on this list award age-group results in 5- or 10-year brackets rather than one "masters" category, but brackets vary by organizer — check each race's rules page before registering if it matters to you.
