Arizona Trail Races & Ultramarathons

Arizona has more than a dozen trail races and ultramarathons on the calendar to check out, split into two effectively separate seasons: high-country races around Flagstaff and Prescott (5,000–7,000 feet) run September through October before winter snow, while low-desert races around Phoenix and Page run December through March to avoid summer heat. Black Canyon Ultras is the state's toughest and most prestigious, a Western States Golden Ticket race.

Masters Athlete Insights

Arizona's 16 races split cleanly into two calendars once you sort them by elevation. The high country — Flagstaff, Sedona, Prescott, all 5,000–7,000+ feet — races in September and October, before the first snow. The low desert — Phoenix, Vail, Page, Apache Junction, Sonoita — races December through March, after summer heat breaks. There's effectively no overlap, and each half needs its own prep: altitude and cool-weather layering for the fall high-country races, heat and sun management for the winter desert ones.

Whichever half of Arizona you're racing, our 16-week 50K plan is a reasonable base-building structure, and the 10-week maintenance program works well in the gap between a fall Flagstaff race and a winter desert one.
