Intro
Bend sits at about 3,600 feet on the eastern flank of the Cascades, where ponderosa forest gives way to the sagebrush and lava-rock high desert. The Deschutes River splits the town in half, and within twenty minutes of downtown you can be on singletrack in the Phil's Trail network, gravel-grinding a forgotten Forest Service road, or climbing toward Mt. Bachelor. Roughly 300 days of sun a year and low humidity make it a magnet for both summer trail runners and winter Nordic skiers, and the town has built its identity almost entirely around outdoor recreation and craft beer — there are more than twenty breweries within city limits.
Events of Note
- Peterson Ridge Rumble (April, Sisters) — a long-running 20/40-mile trail race on the Peterson Ridge and Metolius-Windigo trail networks, low-key and community-run, with proceeds supporting the local high school cross country team.
- FootZone Dirty Half (spring, Bend) — a 13.1-mile pavement-to-singletrack course through the National Forest, finishing with music and a genuine local crowd.
- Bend Trail Series (spring/summer, Bend) — a recurring short-distance trail run series, good for a training-block anchor if you're passing through for a few weeks.
- Haulin' Aspen (August, Bend) — marathon, half, and 6.5-mile options on varied Wanoga Sno Park terrain with a late climb to keep it honest.
- Bend Dirt Fest (July, Bend) — a single-day, three-discipline event out of the Athletic Club of Bend: a 49/36-mile gravel grinder, a 39-mile mountain bike race, and a half-marathon trail run, all starting from the same venue with a shared afternoon party. The event doubles as the Oregon XC Series finals for select mountain bike categories and the Oregon Triple Crown Series finals for gravel, so it draws a strong regional field if you want to test fitness against real competition.
- Waldo 100K (August, Oakridge, ~1 hour away) — for the ultra-curious, a loop ultramarathon starting at Willamette Pass Ski Area with remote singletrack and views of Waldo Lake.
- Smith Rock Classic (Terrebonne, ~25 minutes away) — 10-mile, 50K, and 50-mile options through Smith Rock State Park and the Crooked River Grasslands, mixing singletrack and gravel.
Trails / Routes
- Phil's Trail network — the backbone of Bend running and mountain biking, a sprawling web of connector trails (Ben's, Phil's, Expressway, COD) west of town, mostly flowy and forgiving.
- Shevlin Park — creek-side trails that hug Tumalo Creek, relatively flat, a favorite easy or recovery-day loop.
- Tumalo Falls / Tumalo Creek Trail — starting at the Skyliners trailhead, this route follows Tumalo Creek to Bridge Creek Trail and views of the falls; a Northwest Forest Pass is required for parking.
- Smith Rock State Park — dramatic rock-formation scenery with an extensive trail network (Burma Road Loop is a local favorite), technically a rock-climbing destination but excellent for running.
- Broken Top / Soda Creek loop — a higher-alpine option, snow-free roughly July through October, requiring a Central Oregon Cascades day-use permit.

Masters Intelligence
For a masters athlete, Bend's appeal is the terrain variety packed into a small radius: high-desert flow trails close to town, alpine singletrack up near the Cascade Lakes in summer, and a road and gravel network that lets you dodge traffic almost entirely. Altitude is moderate enough (3,600–4,500 feet for most training) that it won't wreck a taper, but high enough to offer a genuine fitness bump before racing at sea level.
"We loved our time living in Bend, a real outdoor community."

Restaurants
10 Barrel Brewing — Bend's most recognizable brewery, a reliable post-long-run or post-ride stop with a big patio. Pine Mountain Sports — not a restaurant, but the local gear shop and unofficial community hub; worth a stop for race intel and packet pickup logistics. Old Mill District has the highest concentration of casual, athlete-friendly restaurants and coffee within walking distance of the river trail.
Where to Stay
Downtown Bend or the Old Mill District for walkability to the river trail and easy shuttle access to Phil's Trail trailheads. Westside neighborhoods (near Shevlin Park) if trail access matters more than nightlife — you can run out the door onto singletrack. For race trips based around Sisters or Smith Rock, consider lodging in Sisters itself to cut drive time to Peterson Ridge or the Smith Rock trailheads.
